Between the mountains and the sea

A temple tour Pemuteran can fit into a single afternoon

A temple tour Pemuteran visitors can actually complete in one afternoon comes down to three temples, all within a few minutes of each other on the coast road. Pura Pulaki sits against the hills. Pura Pabean stands across the road on ground that borders the ocean. Pura Melanting is up on the slopes of Mount Pulaki, in forest, and it is the one most people remember.

Pemuteran is known for its beaches, its hills and its reef. The temples get far less attention, which is the reason to go. These are working village temples rather than ticketed monuments, so you see people using them. Our driver and English speaking guide handle the route, the sarong and the donations, and the afternoon ends with sunset from the beach.

01

Pura Pulaki

The main temple for Pemuteran village. It backs straight onto the hills, with courtyard walls built up against the rock. A troop of grey macaques lives on the slope above and comes down into the grounds.

02

Pura Pabean

Across the road, on ground bordered by the ocean. Local fishermen pray here for safe journeys. The decoration is an unusual blend of Balinese and Chinese styles, which is not something you see at most temples on the island.

03

Pura Segara

At the foot of Pura Pabean, right next to the sea. Much older and far more basic than its neighbour. The only decoration is two piles of stones, heavily weathered, with a vaguely human shape.

04

Pura Melanting

The temple of traders, where merchants and business owners come to ask for fortune and good luck. It dates to the 15th century and sits on the slopes of Mount Pulaki, surrounded by tropical forest and local vineyards.

One afternoon, four stops

How the tour runs

Why the afternoon

Late in the day is when these temples are worth seeing

The temples are open through the day, but the middle hours are hot, the light is flat and the coast road is at its busiest. Things change after about three in the afternoon. The heat drops, the sea breeze picks up at Pabean, and the low sun catches the stonework instead of washing it out.

A 3 PM start puts you at the coastal temples first and at Melanting around five, which is the quietest and best lit part of the visit. Then you finish on the beach for sunset. Mornings work too, and they pair well with a boat trip. A morning snorkeling trip to Menjangan Island is back in time for a temple tour Pemuteran pickup in the afternoon.
