Wall diving inside a national park

Scuba diving Menjangan is the calm end of Bali diving

Scuba diving Menjangan means wall diving. The reef runs along the island and then falls away vertically, with soft corals, gorgonians and overhangs the whole way down. Visibility reaches thirty metres on a good day, which is what makes the photography here worth the trip.

The current is the other half of the story. Menjangan sits in a sheltered strait, so conditions are gentle compared with Nusa Penida or Amed. That makes it unusually forgiving for newly certified divers, while giving experienced ones a wall deep enough to be interesting.

The wall

The defining feature. Coral starts shallow and then drops vertically, so you can run a dive along the face at whatever depth your certification and air allow.

02

Gentle current

Sheltered water and light current. Divers who found Nusa Penida intimidating tend to relax here within the first ten minutes.

03

Thirty metre visibility

At its best. That is exceptional for Bali and the reason underwater photographers keep coming back to this one island.

04

Eleven sites

Walls, caves, a wreck, coral gardens and sandy slopes, all around one small island. Diving them all properly takes about three days.

Two ways to do it

Share the boat or take it

Both scuba diving Menjangan trips include two dives, two sites and a picnic lunch on the beach. The difference is the departure time and who else is aboard.

Your day on the water

Two dives, and an hour ashore that nobody expects to enjoy

A scuba diving Menjangan day starts at Banyuwedang harbour, about thirty minutes from the island by boat. The first dive runs roughly 45 minutes, then you come ashore for a picnic lunch, a walk and the second dive at a different site.

Which two sites you dive is decided on the day, on the water, based on conditions. That is not evasiveness, it is how diving works here. On a private boat you can talk it through with the guide beforehand. Not certified yet? Start with try scuba diving or a dive course.

Practical notes

  • CertificationBring your card and logbook. Tell us your level and when you last dived.
  • Rusty diversMenjangan is a good place to come back to diving, but say so in advance so the guide can plan a refresher.
  • FlyingWait at least 18 hours after your last dive before flying. Plan the final dive day accordingly.
  • CameraWide angle for the wall. Thirty metres of visibility is wasted on a macro lens.
  • Three daysDiving all eleven sites properly takes about three days. Ask about multi day rates if that appeals.
  • Own gearFull equipment is included, but bring your own mask and computer if you prefer them.

Menjangan is inside West Bali National Park, so the diving is regulated and the reef is in good condition because of it. Outside the park boundary, diving at Pemuteran adds muck sites, the Biorock project and a night dive. If you would rather stay on the surface, our snorkeling trips visit the same island.

Common questions

Unusually so. Scuba diving Menjangan means gentle current and sheltered water, which is the opposite of Nusa Penida. The wall means you can stay shallow along the top while a more experienced buddy goes deeper on the same dive.

Decided on the day, based on conditions. Eleven sites exist and the guide picks the two that are working that morning. On a private boat you can discuss your preferences beforehand.

Up to thirty metres at its best, which is exceptional for Bali and a large part of why scuba diving Menjangan is worth the drive north. It varies with season and weather like anywhere else, but the sheltered position means it holds up better here than on the exposed coasts.

Yes, and Menjangan is a sensible place to do it. Tell us when you last dived when you book, so the guide can plan a refresher into the first dive rather than discovering it underwater.

About three, at two dives a day. Most guests do one trip and pick their favourite two. If you want the full set, message us and we will plan the days.

Not straight away. Wait at least 18 hours after your last dive before flying, and plan your final dive day well before your flight out of Bali.
