A dolphin tour in Lovina starts before the sun does

A dolphin tour at Lovina starts on a calm stretch of fine black sand on the north coast, and the waters off it are home to a resident dolphin population rather than a seasonal one. They are seen through the year, in both dry and rainy season, because this is where they live.

The boats go out at first light because that is when the dolphins are feeding and the sea is flattest. From Pemuteran that means a 5 AM pickup, which is early by any standard, but the sunrise over the water on the way out is a large part of why people remember the morning.

01

Resident, not migratory

The pods off Lovina are not passing through on a season. They are seen from January to December, which is unusual and the reason this trip runs every day of the year.

02

Small boats

Traditional outriggers, roughly nine metres long and only eighty centimetres across, carrying a maximum of six guests and a captain. You sit low and close to the water.

03

The sunrise

You are on the water before the sun clears the hills behind Lovina. Even on a morning when the dolphins stay distant, the light on the way out is worth the alarm.

04

Back by ten

Leaving Pemuteran at 5 AM puts you back at your hotel around 10 AM, which leaves most of the day free for waterfalls, temples or the hot springs on the way home.

Two private options

Watch, or get in the water

Both dolphin tour options are private and leave from the Pemuteran or Menjangan area. The swim option starts half an hour earlier.

Why so early

The window is about three hours wide, and it opens at six

A dolphin tour at Lovina runs from roughly 6 AM to 9 AM. After that the wind picks up, the sea roughens and the pods move on. Two hours on the water inside that window is the whole trip.

Pemuteran is about an hour up the coast, which is why pickup is at 5 AM for the watching trip and 4:30 AM for the snorkel option. Staying closer to Lovina the night before is worth considering if a 5 AM alarm on holiday sounds unreasonable, and our where to stay page covers the area.

What to bring

  • Breakfast boxAsk your hotel the night before. You leave before any kitchen opens and you will not eat until ten.
  • A layerIt is genuinely cool on the water before sunrise, and the boat moves. Bring something with sleeves.
  • Dry bagThe outriggers sit low and you will get spray. Phones and cameras need protecting.
  • CameraA zoom helps. Dolphins surface briefly and at a distance, and the light is low at first.
  • SunscreenNot for the start, but the sun is strong by eight and there is no shade on the boat.
  • Seasickness tabletsTake them before you leave if you are prone. A small boat on an empty stomach is a bad combination.

Common questions

The dolphins are active between roughly 6 and 9 AM, and the sea is flattest then. Pemuteran is about an hour from Lovina, so a 5 AM pickup puts you on the water at the right time. The snorkel option leaves at 4:30 AM.

No, and be wary of any dolphin tour that tells you otherwise. The pods off Lovina are resident and seen through the year, which makes sightings very likely, but they are wild animals in open sea. Some mornings they are distant, and occasionally they do not appear at all.

Any month. The dolphins live here rather than migrating through, so they are seen from January to December in both dry and rainy season. Sea conditions vary more than the dolphins do.

A traditional outrigger, about nine metres long and eighty centimetres wide, carrying a maximum of six guests plus the captain. Both dolphin tour options are private, so the boat is yours.

No. You leave before anywhere is open and return around 10 AM, so ask your hotel the night before for a breakfast box to take on the boat.

The sea is usually calm and life jackets are provided for everyone. The early start and a small boat are the real considerations. Tell us the ages when you book.
