A mangrove tour you take sitting just above the waterline
A mangrove tour in Gilimanuk runs by jukung, the narrow outrigger canoe Balinese fishermen have always used here. It sits low, it draws almost no water, and it slips into channels a motorboat could never enter. You end up at eye level with the roots.
A mangrove tour here covers the widest mangrove forest in West Bali National Park. The park protects 28 mangrove species in total, close to 11.5 percent of every mangrove plant found in Indonesia, and this is the stretch where you see the range of them properly.
The root zone
Prop roots and pneumatophores, the breathing roots that push up through the mud. This is the structure everything else depends on, and from a jukung you are right inside it.
Open channels
Wider water between the stands, where kingfishers hunt from exposed branches and herons work the margins. Best light for photographs is here.
Mudflats
Exposed at low tide and worked over by waders and egrets. Mudskippers and fiddler crabs are active across the surface.
Gilimanuk Bay
Where the channels open out. The bay is a nursery for juvenile fish, which is the reason the birdlife here is as dense as it is.
Sunrise or late afternoon
Both mangrove tour departures last about 2.5 hours and cover the same channels. The difference is the light and which animals are moving.
Sunrise
Departs 6 AM- LightSunrise over the channels, the strongest photography window of the day
- BirdsPeak activity, with herons and egrets feeding before the heat
- WaterUsually glassy, so reflections are at their best
- AirCoolest part of the day and fewer insects
The stronger option if you came for birds or photographs. It also frees the rest of your day.

The park entrance fee is included, so there is no counter to find on the morning of your mangrove tour. Permit counters keep short hours and take cash only, which is where independent visitors usually lose time. Our permits and fees guide explains the system.

Birds feed at dawn and dusk, not at noon
Mangrove birds work the tide and the temperature. Through the middle of the day most of them are sitting still in shade, and the light is flat and hard overhead. Neither is what you want.
Both mangrove tour departures are placed on the activity peaks instead. If birds are the main reason you are coming, the sunrise trip is the stronger of the two, and our bird watching trips go further into the same habitat.
What to bring
- RepellentThe single most useful thing you can pack. Mangrove means mosquitoes, particularly at first light.
- Long sleevesLight and loose. Better than repellent alone in the root channels.
- CameraA zoom helps for birds. Keep it in a dry bag between shots, since a jukung sits low and you will get spray.
- BinocularsWorth bringing for the mudflat waders, which stay at a distance.
- Sun hatThere is little shade in the open channels even early on.
- FootwearSandals you do not mind getting wet. You step in and out of the boat from soft ground.
What the mangrove tour turns up
Eighteen species our guides point out regularly on this route. Nothing here is guaranteed, and the bird list changes with the season.
Nothing matches that search.

Common questions
The mangrove tour runs about 2.5 hours on the water. Add roughly an hour each way for the transfer from the Pemuteran or Menjangan area, which is included in the rate.
Take the sunrise trip if you want birds, reflections or photographs. Take the afternoon trip if an early start does not appeal, or if you want to spend the morning somewhere else.
A traditional Balinese outrigger canoe. It is narrow, stable and sits low in the water, which is what lets it work the shallow mangrove channels a larger boat cannot reach.
Yes. The water is sheltered and the pace is slow. Tell us the ages when you book so we can size the boat and have the right vests on board.
Yes, and honestly that is worth planning for. Mangrove is mosquito habitat. Repellent and long sleeves make the difference between a good trip and an itchy one, especially at sunrise.
Yes. The afternoon mangrove tour pairs well with a morning snorkeling trip to Menjangan Island, and the sunrise departure leaves the rest of your day open. Message us and we will line up both.
