Discover Scuba Diving, no course needed

Try scuba diving with no licence and no course

Try scuba diving at Menjangan is for people who have never dived and hold no certification. A professional instructor teaches you the basic skills, fits your gear and stays with you in the water for the whole dive. No classroom, no exam, no commitment.

Menjangan suits try scuba diving better than almost anywhere else in Bali. The island sits inside a sheltered strait with gentle currents and high visibility, and the two sites used for this programme are shallow, sandy and calm. You start in three to five metres of water.

Gear and briefing

Your instructor explains how the equipment works, how to breathe through a regulator and how to clear your mask. It is short and practical.

02

Sandy Slope

The first site. A gentle sand slope in three to five metres, which is where you practise the basic skills directly in the ocean rather than a pool.

03

Pos I

The second site, after lunch. By now you are comfortable, so the dive is about looking rather than learning. Depth goes to a maximum of seven metres.

04

The instructor stays with you

This is not a guided tour where you follow at a distance. Your instructor is within arm’s reach for the whole of both dives.

Two ways to do it

Share the boat or take it

Both try scuba diving options include two dives, two sites and the beach lunch. The difference is the departure time and who else is aboard.

Your day on the water

Two dives, and the depth builds with your confidence

A try scuba diving day starts at Banyuwedang harbour, about thirty minutes from the island by boat. The first dive runs roughly 45 minutes in three to five metres, with the skills practised directly in the ocean rather than a pool.

After an hour on the beach for lunch, you dive a second site for 45 minutes to an hour. That one goes to a maximum of seven metres, and how deep you actually go depends entirely on how you are doing. Nobody is pushed. If you want to go further afterwards, look at our dive courses.

Before you dive

  • Tell usAbout asthma, heart or lung conditions, ear or sinus trouble, recent surgery, epilepsy, diabetes or pregnancy. None of these is automatically a no, but the instructor needs to know beforehand.
  • FlyingDo not fly for at least 18 hours after a two dive day. Plan this trip so it is not the day before you leave Bali.
  • ColdsIf you cannot clear your ears on land, you will not be able to underwater. A blocked nose on the day is a genuine reason to reschedule.
  • AlcoholNothing the night before beyond a drink or two, and nothing on the morning of the dive.
  • SwimmingYou do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable having your face in the water.
  • GlassesContact lenses are usually fine. Tell us your prescription if you need a corrective mask.

Already certified? The wall at Menjangan drops far deeper than this programme goes, and scuba diving at Menjangan is the trip for that. If you would rather stay on the surface, our snorkeling trips visit the same island.

Common questions

No. Try scuba diving exists precisely for people who have never dived and hold no certification. A professional instructor teaches you what you need and stays with you in the water.

The first dive is in three to five metres. The second goes to a maximum of seven metres, and only as deep as you are comfortable with. The instructor decides with you, on the day.

Nerves are normal on a try scuba diving trip and the instructor expects them. The water is calm and shallow enough to stand up in at the first site, and you can end a dive at any point without explaining yourself. A private boat is worth considering if you would rather nobody was waiting on you.

Not straight away. The standard recommendation is to wait at least 18 hours after a two dive day before flying. Plan this trip so it is not the day before your flight home.

No, but you should be comfortable in water with your face submerged. Tell us when you book if you are not, and we will make sure the instructor takes it slowly.

Tell us before you book. Asthma, heart and lung conditions, ear or sinus problems, recent surgery, epilepsy, diabetes and pregnancy all need to be raised beforehand. None of them is automatically a no, but the instructor has to know, and some cases need a doctor’s clearance.

Most introductory diving programmes set a minimum age of 10. Tell us the ages when you enquire and we will confirm what we can offer your group.
