Dive Pemuteran and you dive a reef rebuilt with electricity
Dive Pemuteran and you are diving a restoration project as much as a reef. The marine park was established in 2000 by Yayasan Karang Lestari using Biorock, a technique that runs a low voltage current through submerged steel frames to accelerate coral growth.
It works. Coral on the structures grows two to six times faster than it would naturally, with survival rates many times higher, including through the warm water events that bleach reefs elsewhere. More than 70 structures are now thriving, and the bay has become one of the world’s better known examples of reef restoration you can actually swim around.
Biorock structures
The award winning shore site, and the reason most divers come. Steel frames carrying dense coral growth, shallow enough for an Open Water diver or a refresher.
Muck and sand
The Jetty and Mandarin sites are black sand muck diving. Frogfish, ghost pipefish, seahorses and the small strange things that live on a bare bottom.
Offshore reefs
Close Encounters, Deep Middle Reef and Gede’s Reef, five to fifteen minutes out. Clear water, sea fans and the only wall-like profile in the bay.
Sunk on purpose
A Balinese temple lies at 30 metres at Temple Wall, and Biowreck is a solar powered artificial reef offshore. Both are Advanced sites.
Three ways to dive Pemuteran
Every dive Pemuteran package is private and needs a minimum booking of two people. Sites are matched to your certification level and what you want to see.

Three ways the diving here works
Few places in Bali let you dive Pemuteran’s mix in one day: a coral restoration project, a black sand muck site and an offshore seamount in the same day.

One dive here runs to the fish’s schedule, not yours
Mandarin fish are about six centimetres long, brilliantly patterned, and they live deep in the gaps of the coral. They come out to feed and mate for roughly an hour around dusk, between six and seven in the evening, and that is the only time you will see them.
That is why the dive Pemuteran night package starts at 5:30 PM, half an hour before sunset. You are in the water and settled before the window opens. Arrive late and the dive is still good muck diving, but the fish will not wait. If you are not certified yet, start with try scuba diving or a dive course.
Practical notes
- CertificationBring your card and logbook. Four of the eight sites need Advanced, the rest are Open Water.
- Minimum 2Every package needs at least two divers booked. Message us if you are solo and we will try to pair you.
- Rusty?Biorock is shallow and calm, which makes it the right site for a refresher before anything deeper.
- FlyingWait at least 18 hours after your last dive before flying. Plan the last dive day accordingly.
- CameraMacro lens for the muck sites. The mandarin fish are tiny and the light is going.
- TorchProvided, but bring your own back-up if you have one for the night dive.

Common questions
You can dive Pemuteran with an Open Water card at Biorock, Close Encounters and Deep Middle Reef. Jetty, Mandarin, Temple Wall, Biowreck and Gede’s Reef are Advanced sites. Tell us your level and we will build the day around it.
All three packages are private trips, priced on a minimum booking of two divers. If you are travelling solo, message us and we will see whether we can pair you with another booking on the same day.
A reef restoration method that passes a low voltage current through submerged steel structures, which encourages coral to grow on them. Coral on the Biorock frames grows two to six times faster than natural coral and survives heat stress far better. Pemuteran has more than 70 of these structures.
They are seen reliably in the right window, which is roughly 6 to 7 PM, and the trip is timed for it. They are small, shy and wild, so it is never a certainty. The rest of the dive is good muck diving either way.
No. Biorock is shallow, calm and close to shore, which makes it the right place for a refresher before you go deeper or further out. Tell us when you last dived so the guide can plan.
Not immediately. Wait at least 18 hours after your last dive before flying. If you are diving three days in a row, plan the final day well before your flight out.
